Food Rules, Rule Number Five

‘Though wickedness is sweet in their mouth,
though they hide it under their tongues,”

-Job 20:12 (NRSV)

I just said sugar is not inherently evil, and I meant it. But Pollan’s right to caution us in Rule Five, because ingredients are listed by relative amounts, from greatest to least. File this rule under too much of a good thing.

It is a challenging one. Most of what we eat in a day has some form of sugar, and the U.S. palate, in general, is tuned to sweet things more than savory. Our epidemics seem to indicate it too…rampant diabetes, among other things. And while some of those folks can rightfully say, “I’m genetically disposed,” there are countless others who are indulging beyond any reasonable measure.

Lighten up on the sugar, especially as an ingredient of foods you buy. But continue to use the real thing when you want something sweet. There are still far too many unanswered questions around artificial sweeteners.

Finally, remember this: neither Pollan nor I are doctors. Ask your physician what they recommend.
