Food Rules, Rule Number Eight

Will it be well with you when he searches you out?
Or can you deceive him, as one person deceives another?

-Job 13:9 (NRSV)

Health claims are just about everywhere in food marketing today. The word is “lite” springs to mind. There are brands like Healthy Choice (don’t bother to check the number of ingredients in those) and many foods come in a “low-carb” version as well. All of these things are basically food-like substances masquerading as the very things they purport to replace.

But replacing them doesn’t necessarily get you something better.  I was using “light mulit-grain” English muffins, because nutritionally, they were coming in much lower than a regular english muffin. But of course, the list of ingredients for the “healthy” ones turned out to be a mile long. Is it worth it for a little lighter product, in terms of fat and carb content? Not at this point in my life. As I try to be more of a “quality” eater than a “quantity” eater, I find I just need to focus on smaller portions of the real thing.

At least where the two things are basically the same, as in the this case. I’m still not going to eat regular ice-cream when the “slow-churned” versions are available. But that’s me breaking the rule for what I consider the Greater Good. Mmmmm. Ice cream.
